It's not what you think...

When I started out in photography, it was always about making you the star. It had absolutely nothing to do with me. I was just the guy behind the camera thinking about how to make your dream a reality. I think a lot of folks who do a photoshoot try to please the photographer when it should be all about you. This is your photoshoot, and my job is to deliver on what you have in your mind.

Before I even schedule a shoot with someone, I always ask the following questions:

  • Why did you schedule this photoshoot?
  • When was the last time you did a photoshoot?
  • What ideas do you have that I can make happen?
  • How can I make you feel comfortable during the photoshoot?
  • What would make this a successful session in your eyes?

These are the questions I ask every client. period. Whether it's a seasoned professional or a young family who has never done a photoshoot as a family. This allows me to gauge the level of guidance that they need. I am as fun, energetic and creative as they come but I'm not going to push someone to do something that is not a part of their vision. That is a lose-lose in my book. Don't get me wrong, if a client needs advice or wants creative ideas, I have a laundry list of examples to show and ideas I would love to bring to life, but, it needs to match what the client ultimately wants in the end.

We live most of our lives online and my clients have seen an actor, a friend, a co-worker, etc. post pictures online and think to themselves that they want something similar or something completely different and it is my job to find that out prior to scheduling the shoot so I can meet 100% of your needs and provide a stellar experience with top notch results.

As an example, in the picture above, Jack said he only cared about pictures of his Mustang, so as a photographer who listens, we spent the majority of his senior session, taking pictures of him and his car. Multiple angles, every side of the car, moving the car to different locations, it was what Jack wanted, not me.

To recap, I am here to capture your vision, not mine, and it is an amazing feeling to deliver a gallery that hits the mark for the client.
